The decision to withdraw from artistic production and the discourse that such a decision triggers speaks about the functions of the art world and the conditions of artistic production. Duchamp was among the first artists to adopt the concept of withdrawal. In the 60s and 70s, it became a logical step following premises of conceptual art and the gradual dematerialization of the art object to finally refrain from artistic practice altogether and engage in other fields.
